Overview of the Unit
5 West is a medical, surgical, orthopedic and spine unit consisting of 36 beds which can overflow into 5 South when 5 West beds are full. 5 South has an additional 21 beds. All rooms are private rooms with bathrooms and showers. 5 West staff has the capability to administer telemetry and the unit contains four negative pressure isolation rooms.
The patient population mostly consists of surgery patients including cholecystectomy, appendectomy, thyroidectomy, hemicolectomy, joint and spine and urological surgeries. Medical patients include cardiac and respiratory. 5 West is in the process of developing half of the department as an orthopedic, joint and spine unit and will include a nurse practitioner.
We have an all RN staff with assistance from CNAs and unit secretaries. There are clinical supervisors responsible for each shift, and total oversite by a nurse manager who reports to the Director of Rehabilitation Services. ACLS is not required
