Summerlin Hospital Celebrates 25th Anniversary with Continued Expansion
(October 17, 2022 – Las Vegas, NV) – Summerlin Hospital, which opened as a 148-bed hospital on October 16, 1997, is celebrating its 25th anniversary by adding 31 medical-surgical beds. Another 11 beds for general pediatric and pediatric intensive care will be added by 2024, bringing the hospital’s total bed count to 496.
“As the master-planned community of Summerlin continues to grow, so do we,” said Rob Freymuller, CEO of Summerlin Hospital since 2008. “Over the past 25 years, we’ve expanded our services to meet the needs of area residents. Among our signature services are a very busy maternity department and Level III neonatal intensive care, advanced cardiovascular services, our children’s medical center with a pediatric ER, surgery, inpatient and ICU care and outpatient therapy services, surgical services using minimally invasive technology and cancer care for all ages.
“While we are one of the largest hospitals in Nevada with a comprehensive array of advanced health care services, none of it would be possible without our outstanding team of dedicated employees, physicians and volunteers who share a passion for excellence,” said Freymuller. “Their commitment to our patients and families, their coworkers and our community is the key to our success.”
Summerlin Hospital also played a unique role in the establishment of The Valley Health System. Before 1997, Valley Hospital was the only Las Vegas-area acute care hospital owned by Universal Health Services (UHS). “The addition of Summerlin Hospital launched The Valley Health System,” said Karla Perez, Regional Vice President, Acute Care Division, UHS. This was followed by the acquisition of Desert Springs Hospital (1998) and the openings of Spring Valley Hospital (2003), Centennial Hills Hospital (2008), Henderson Hospital (2016), The Valley Health Specialty Hospital (2021) and West Henderson Hospital (2024).
Unique Highlights of Summerlin Hospital
Advanced Cardiovascular Care – Summerlin Hospital services include cardiac surgery, cardiac cath procedures, electrophysiology procedures, a cardiovascular care unit and the only outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program in The Valley Health System.
Minimally Invasive “Robotic” Surgery Leader – Robotic-assisted surgery allows physicians to perform complex surgeries with greater precision and flexibility as patients benefit from reduced pain and blood loss, decreased risk of infection and shorter recovery times. In Spring 2022, the surgery team celebrated the monumental milestone of performing more than 12,000 surgical cases using minimally invasive technology!
Cancer Care for All Ages – Summerlin Hospital serves as The Valley Health System hub for oncology services, providing oncology-related surgery, breast and urology-specific procedures and inpatient chemotherapy for adults and children.
Establishment of a Dedicated Education Unit for Nursing Students – Since 2012, Summerlin Hospital has created a nurturing environment for UNLV nursing students within its Dedicated Education Unit (DEU). Currently, there are two DEUs at Summerlin Hospital, where students partner with dedicated staff nurses each semester to assist in caring for the nurses’ assigned patients; this allows the nurses to provide individualized attention to the students and share information, education, tips and best practices for nursing responsibilities and patient care.
Home to the VHS Emergency Medicine Residency Program – The Emergency Medicine residency program began in July 2020, accepting eight residents each year for its three-program. Residents rotate among five hospitals but spend the majority of their time at Summerlin Hospital working in the areas of adult and pediatric ER, emergency medical services (EMS), administration and ultrasound.
